Friday, September 20, 2019 children around the world will Strike for the Climate.

23rd Legislative District Democrats 2018 Platform

VI. ENVIRONMENT – We believe that a new energy policy, focused on self-sufficiency and the reduction of pollution, is vital to our nation’s security and continued economic well-being. We believe in a pragmatic, science-based evaluation of the causes and outcomes of climate change. We support the expansion of renewable energy sources including, but not limited to solar and wind. We support the conservation of our groundwater resources and the creation of policies that promote low-impact development, water reuse, water reclamation, and aquifer protection.

We believe in support and enactment of responsible international and domestic environmental laws and their vigorous enforcement…

These are words from our Democratic Party Platform. We think you will agree that they haven’t moved us to action. Our children have noticed and have decided to take action on their own.

These are the words of sixteen year old climate activist Greta Thunberg. In August 2018, at the age of 15, Thunberg took time off school to demonstrate outside the Swedish parliament holding up a sign calling for bold climate action. Her "school strike for the climate" began attracting media attention and other students then engaged in similar protests in their own communities. In her words:

“This is where people usually start talking about hope, solar panels, wind power, circular economy, and so on, but I'm not going to do that. We've had 30 years of pep-talking and selling positive ideas. And I'm sorry, but it doesn't work. Because if it would have, the emissions would have gone down by now. They haven't. And yes, we do need hope, of course we do. But the one thing we need more than hope is action. Once we start to act, hope is everywhere.”

“So instead of looking for hope, look for action. Then, and only then, hope will come.”

Our children can’t vote for Climate Action, as we can, but they can Strike to Save the Planet and hope we come with them!

In a vote of the board, the 23rd Legislative District Democrats Executive Board asks that the Membership of the Central Committee of the 23rd LD Democrats support the children of the world in their mission. This is only a request since an official action would take a vote of the Membership, and since the strike is scheduled a week ahead of our next meeting, we can only advise and request. The 23rd LD Salmon Dinner committee has a problem - more diners than desserts.

We are attracting a ABOUT 30% more people than last year, that is the good news. The bad news is we need a dessert for every table. We expect the desserts to go for about $100 each. We desperately need 9 more PLEASE PLEASE sign up even if you don't bake. Bakery is fine, but no box of costco cookies. We want to make money on the dessert auction. Looking delicious sells.  For those who have already committed, thanks so much.  For those who have not, respond to this with your name, phone number and email address. We will be back in touch.

OLYMPIA – Sen. Christine Rolfes, D-Bainbridge Island, received the Washington State Parent Teacher Association’s highest honor at the organization’s annual conference in Vancouver in May 2018.

Rolfes was the recipient of the 2018 Friend of Children Award, which recognizes an individual or organization for state-level dedication “to all children” in Washington State by supporting the whole child through advocacy, education, family and community engagement, health and
    well-being, and safety.

“This award is extremely meaningful for me as a Mom and a legislator, especially coming from an organization that supports crucial volunteer work at home and advocacy at the state level,” Rolfes said.

Rolfes has become a leading voice on education funding and reform over the past decade, working toward bipartisan solutions to improve outcomes for all public school students around the state. Rolfes is the vice
chair of the Senate Early Learning & K-12 Education Committee and chairs the Senate Ways & Means Committee.
