Bernie Suspends Campaign - State Chair Comments

8 Apr 2020 3:10 PM | Douglass MacKenzie

Mary Bryant Here is part of a message sent today by WA Democrats Chair, Tina Podlodowski:

With this news we have received quite a few questions already this morning regarding the continuation of the delegate selection process and National Convention. Because of this I thought it would be prudent to get an email out as soon as possible to clarify that Senator Sanders suspension of his campaign does not affect our delegate selection process currently. Senator Sanders still retains his 687 LD level delegates to our state Convention, and we are still electing National Delegates pledged to Senator Sanders at the CD selection process on May 30th.

Please don’t stop recruiting to fill these delegate slots. Remember the link is: https://www.waelectioncenter.com

Both the State and National Convention are about so much more than just casting the final vote for the Democratic Presidential nominee. These conventions are an opportunity for you to network with folks who share your beliefs and vision for our future, organize, build, and make lifelong friendships. I know at least a few of you out there met at 2016 Convention, and have been fast friends ever since…I am still friends with people from my experiences at the 2000 Convention in Los Angeles!

Also remember, while the delegates to State Convention are elected by presidential preference, it’s important to remember that essentially none of the work that we do at State Convention is connected to the Presidential Nominating process. The role of a State Convention delegate is exactly the same today as it was yesterday, regardless of the candidate they represent, and they still have all of the same ability to influence the future of our party. And, if folks are concerned about gathering in June at the State Convention, do know that we keep in close contact with statewide health and safety efforts, and will do nothing that puts anyone at risk. There should be no pandemic-related obstacles to becoming a delegate, other than obvious ones of personal health and family situation.

So, please continue your recruitment efforts. As of last night we only had recruited enough delegates to fill 33% of all seats statewide, with the highest districts delegate recruitment (LD 22, congratulations!) only having 61% of possible seats filled. This news will inevitably bring further obstacles to filling these seats, but as a party, we have to ensure that everyone realizes the way to build the party is by participating, and that there is a lot to do at both State and National Convention, and, most importantly, we, as Democrats, want their voices with us.
