Message from the Chair

Hi all,

This is your last GOTV (get out the vote) reminder to VOTE and get your ballot in a ballot box by 8 pm next Tuesday or in the mail now to ensure a timely receipt by the auditor’s office in Port Orchard. Voting is where your power lies as a citizen of this country. It is your vote that determines who ends up in office where decisions are made that directly affect you. Do not let others make those decisions without your input – so VOTE!

On another note, our speaker from last week’s LD meeting, Ben Chapman, was very gracious in dealing with our zoom link issues and responded by offering the following.

If anyone from the 23rd LD has any questions about 8201, they can absolutely email me or check our website FAQ for info.  If you do contact him, please thank him for extending himself this way. This issue is on the ballot and so it behooves folks to get their questions, if any, answered.

Here is one that was asked by Judi Leader:

I have a few questions about 8201.  Thank you for offering to answer them as things didn't go as planned at the 23rd LD meeting tonight.

What if the market takes a downfall?  How are the funds being protected?  Is there a stop-loss in place?

Response from Ben Chapman:

"Hey Judith,

Of course! These are great questions.

Importantly, 8201 doesn't allow the Washington State Investment Board to invest all of our long-term care dollars in this different way -- just a portion. In fact, I believe it's less than a majority of funds. So the money will be there for people who need it to cover their long-term care costs.

One notable advantage that the State Investment Board has with this fund that, while investors like you and I might be heavily affected by short term dips and bubbles, the State Investment Board is investing for the VERY long term. That means they are able to ride out the market ups and downs much more smoothly.

A way that I like to explain 8201 is that it simply opens up more options for the State Investment Board to take advantage of opportunities when they see them. They have a sophisticated investment strategy, since they've been doing this for awhile, and 8201 will give them more tools in the toolbox for success.

Cheers, and let me know if you have any other questions!

-Ben"
